STAR OF THE WEEK – 27.03.20

    Everybody!
for your impressive efforts during our first week of home learning tasks. It has not been easy for anyone to adjust to these new expectations, but I am incredibly grateful for all parents and children for working so hard to try and complete some of the activities I have set.

    Well done!

    THIS WEEK’S SHOW STOPPER

    This week’s Showstopper is: Arabella

Click here to read Arabella’s writing completed for one of her home-learning tasks this week. Using videos from Chester Zoo’s social media pages, Arabella has written the next paragraph of my Katie’s Day Out story. A fantastic effort with a super drawing to go with it. [See the instructions for this task on our Week 2 Home Learning tab below, and send me your own pieces of writing on our class email.]

    MATHS

    • Please see the learning I have set on MyMaths. Follow the lesson before having a go at the homework task.
    • Have a go at playing the ‘Hit the Button‘ game on TopMarks – Work on Number Bonds to 20 and Halves to 10.
    • Print-at-home Maths task worksheets based on our last two weeks of learning: Division by Sharing and Simple Fractions

    ENGLISH
    Phonics

    • Complete the Phase 5 worksheet. What is the word shown in the picture? Can you think of another word using that sound? Extra challenge: Write a sentence containing your new word.
    • If you can, print the Phase 4 Phonics Booklet. Complete a little bit each day until you have finished it.

Writing – The past few weeks we have been learning the story of Handa’s Surprise. We have innovated it as a class, changing the characters and fruits. I would like you to show what you know by writing your very own invented version of Handa’s Surprise. Perhaps instead of Handa, you could use your own name! Don’t forget that you must use:

    • Capital letters
    • Full stops, question marks or exclamation marks ( . ? ! )
    • Adjectives to describe the food items and characters.

Parents, you could photograph and email me the finished stories on our Class 1 email address.

    Reading:

    • Select and read a book from your Bug Club login. Read and complete the bug questions, so I can see how you are doing and help where I can.
    • Read daily for at least 15 minutes: from one of your school reading books, a book you have at home.
    • Log every time you read in your reading journal.
    • Talk to someone about the book you have read – what was your favourite part? What might have happened differently to change the ending?
    • You could log onto your MicroLibrarian account to browse the online school library catalogue and add a book review.

Reading Comprehension: Read the Seren’s Seasons text. Read through and answer the questions underneath. Note for parents: Children should read independently where possible but may need support to decode some words. There are 3 ‘levels’ of comprehension questions – start with the easiest and work through up to Level 3 if you feel your child is able to. Answers are included.

Grammar: Follow the lesson powerpoint on -ed endings on how to make verbs past tense. Once you have been through the lesson, the worksheets below can be completed. If you cannot print the worksheets, the words and sentences can be written out on paper.

    MATHS

    1. Please see the learning I have set on MyMaths. Follow the lesson before having a go at the homework task. This week your tasks will be about:

    • Addition and subtraction by counting on and back.
    • Introducing 3D shapes.
    • Odd, even and multiple numbers.
    • Time: Sequencing events.

    2. Have a go at playing the ‘Subtraction Grids‘ game on TopMarks – Start with numbers up to 10 before moving on to numbers up to 20. How many questions can you get right before the timer runs out?

    3. Print-at-home Maths worksheets:

    ENGLISH
    Phonics
    1. Have a go at playing the Dragon’s Den Game on PhonicsPlay. Select Phase 4 and click ‘Revise all phase 4’. Decide if the word is a real word or a nonsense word and feed it to the correct dragon. What’s the highest score you can get to? Try Phase 5 if the words are too easy.

    2. Printables:

Writing – Chester Zoo have been posting lots of videos of their animals over on their Facebook Page. I have written the first part of a story about Katie’s Day Out to Chester Zoo. It is your job to write the rest of the story, using the sentence openers I have given you. For this task, I suggest writing in your yellow workbooks so that you have enough space and can write neatly on the lines. Don’t forget that you must use:

    • Capital letters.
    • Full stops, question marks or exclamation marks ( . ? ! )
    • Speech marks if you feel like you know how to.
    • Adjectives to describe. My adjectives are written in green.

Parents, you could photograph and email me the finished stories on our Class 1 email address.
