Phonics

At Thorn Grove we use the Read, Write Inc programme to deliver high quality phonics lessons.

All children in Foundation Stage and Key stage 1 are assessed every half term and are appropriately grouped based on their phonetic understanding.

Both teachers and teaching assistants have up to date training to deliver these lessons and provide 1 to 1 additional support where needed.

Children in Nursery begin to learn initial letter sounds from the beginning of Autumn Term 2. In Reception and Key stage 1 Phonics is taught for 30 minutes every day.

During the phonics lessons the relevant high frequency sight words are also taught. In Key stage 1, allocated spelling lessons are timetabled every week and homework is set that supports and reinforces these lessons. For those children who may still require further support relevant interventions are put into place to be used as an acceleration tool to deepen phonetic understanding.

Parent meetings/phonics workshops are held for EYFS and Year 1 parents in the Autumn Term followed up by coffee mornings throughout the year. This provides parents the opportunity to learn more about how their child is being taught phonics at Thorn Grove and how they can best support
their child at home. In addition to this there is also a parents meeting for the Year 1 parents informing them about the Phonics Screening Check the children take in June.
