Y1 Showstopper 22.11.19

This half term Year 1 have been doing RE for the first time. We have been learning about Christians and what they believe in, as well as discussing some of our own ideas about God. We looked at some artwork that some Christian people have drawn to show their beliefs about God – and then we did our own.

Holly, Harvey and Brody produced some lovely pieces which I have decided to share:

Y5 & Y6 Cross Country Event

On Tuesday 5th November 2019, Miss Brierley and Miss Freebairn took two boys’ Cross Country teams to an event at Marple Hall School. The boys ran a distance of approximately 1.5 kilometres and were ranked individually and as teams.

Out of 11 schools, our Thorn Grove ‘A’ team came 3rd and our Thorn Grove ‘B’ team came 9th. Two of our boys also finished within the top 10 of over 40 runners. Well done to the boys for putting in a fantastic effort!

Cheer Squad continue to lead the way…

On Saturday our amazing Key Stage Two Cheerleading Team attended the UK National Schools Competition held at the Velodrome in Manchester.

The Squad, who were looking to retain the title two years in a row, arrived at the venue in very good spirits and, even though there were some last minute adjustments to the routine, felt confident about performing well.  The children were joined by their amazing Team Spirit coaches Hannah and Lindsey as well as Mr Wilson and Miss Nuttall.

The competition is fiercely contested with teams travelling from as far as Bath to take part and the crowd, who were amazing (and very loud) supported the teams with passion and added to the amazing atmosphere at the venue. The teams only have one chance to perform their routine and because of this the margins for error are very slim; the squads have to be completely in sync and ready to perform when their slot arrives.

The team performed at 10:30am and had to start the preparation an hour prior to this as they made their way through grueling warm-up stations, uniform checks and team photos.

The routine, which contains complicated stunts, tumbles and dancing was delivered with precision, superb timing and fantastic synchronicity  and the children, coaches and supporters knew they had a chance to retain their title.

However, the awards ceremony was some time away and the judges decisions were kept secret until that time; this meant an agonising wait for the results…

During this time the squad members, coaches and staff busied themselves watching the other squads and soaking up the atmosphere of the huge event.

Finally the wait was over, and it was worth it.

Team Spirit at Thorn Grove were announced UK National Champions for the second year in a row.

A huge thank you must go to the parents who helped and supported on the day and of course to the brilliant coaches at Team Spirit, Hannah and Lindsey, who work tirelessly to help the team.

We have a hugely successful cheerleading programme developing at Thorn Grove and we would welcome any children to the sessions, so if any pupils would like to join the squad, please see Mr Wilson in school.

Here are some of the pictures from the day.

Nursery Showstopper W/B 30.04.19

Miss Freebairn has been so impressed with Theo since returning to school after Easter. In Theo’s phonics group, the children have begun to read and write CVC words using their phonics skills. Theo was set a challenge and faced it with buckets of determination! He chose 8 pictures and used his sounds to work out and spell the word underneath. Take a look:

WORLD BOOK DAY 2019!

We had a wonderful day celebrating stories as a whole school. We chose the theme ‘Reading is Magic’ alongside the global theme ‘Share a story’.

We took part in a range of activities including quidditch, magical art and book making. We also created a whole school shared story with a contribution from every class. All pupils enjoyed buddy reading and we even had a few mystery readers!

Have a look at the photos to see what we got up to!

Outdoor Classroom Day 2018

 Mighty Mighty Thorn Grove!

We would like to share some magical moments from our fabulous ‘Outdoor Classroom Day’ earlier this term.  We hope the children told you all about it but if not- here are some highlights!

The day began with an Outdoor Assembly where the teachers shared the Outdoor rules for the day. The number one rule was to enjoy the outdoors!  Each class moved around 6 areas where they took part in a physical activity, circle time, field work, investigation and Forest School challenge.

At play time, the children swapped playgrounds for the day.  During lunch time the whole school shared a picnic on the field.  It was wonderful to see the oldest and youngest children coming together for this!

The afternoon involved children revisiting favourite activities such as den building, compass reading and stone decorating.

Whilst children were busily occupied, each class had an opportunity to toast a marshmallow around the campfire.

This was a special and extraordinary day which we hope children will remember for a very long time!  Many thanks to all our parent helpers who supported the day and to Chris in the kitchen for preparing all the packed lunches!

Netting a good result.

On Tuesday the Thorn Grove Netball team played in the Stockport Legacy Games Netball final at Bramhall High School.

The competition, a gathering of the top teams from across Stockport, saw the local heat winners battling it out to see who would represent the borough at the Greater Manchester Games.

Our year five and six team, had done brilliantly to reach the finals and, despite their lack of experience, approached the tournament with determination and a huge amount of skill.

They performed magnificently in the sweltering conditions and managed to finish fifth out of the ten finalists.

It was a superb performance from players who had only just begun to develop their Netball skills.

As part of the opening ceremony the children were able to meet Olympic, commonwealth and world 4x400m medalist Kelly Massey, who opened the games with an inspiring speech.

Great golf teams perform above par!

On Thursday evening our two brilliant golf teams (Year 5/6 and Year 3/4) took part in the Stockport Finals.

Both teams performed superbly, but a very special mention must go to our Year 3/4 team who were runners up.

Reece and Mia also deserve special recognition as they were chosen as ‘Spirit of the Games’ winners for their wonderful performances.
