Y5 & Y6 Cross Country Event

On Tuesday 5th November 2019, Miss Brierley and Miss Freebairn took two boys’ Cross Country teams to an event at Marple Hall School. The boys ran a distance of approximately 1.5 kilometres and were ranked individually and as teams.

Out of 11 schools, our Thorn Grove ‘A’ team came 3rd and our Thorn Grove ‘B’ team came 9th. Two of our boys also finished within the top 10 of over 40 runners. Well done to the boys for putting in a fantastic effort!

Cheer Squad continue to lead the way…

On Saturday our amazing Key Stage Two Cheerleading Team attended the UK National Schools Competition held at the Velodrome in Manchester.

The Squad, who were looking to retain the title two years in a row, arrived at the venue in very good spirits and, even though there were some last minute adjustments to the routine, felt confident about performing well.  The children were joined by their amazing Team Spirit coaches Hannah and Lindsey as well as Mr Wilson and Miss Nuttall.

The competition is fiercely contested with teams travelling from as far as Bath to take part and the crowd, who were amazing (and very loud) supported the teams with passion and added to the amazing atmosphere at the venue. The teams only have one chance to perform their routine and because of this the margins for error are very slim; the squads have to be completely in sync and ready to perform when their slot arrives.

The team performed at 10:30am and had to start the preparation an hour prior to this as they made their way through grueling warm-up stations, uniform checks and team photos.

The routine, which contains complicated stunts, tumbles and dancing was delivered with precision, superb timing and fantastic synchronicity  and the children, coaches and supporters knew they had a chance to retain their title.

However, the awards ceremony was some time away and the judges decisions were kept secret until that time; this meant an agonising wait for the results…

During this time the squad members, coaches and staff busied themselves watching the other squads and soaking up the atmosphere of the huge event.

Finally the wait was over, and it was worth it.

Team Spirit at Thorn Grove were announced UK National Champions for the second year in a row.

A huge thank you must go to the parents who helped and supported on the day and of course to the brilliant coaches at Team Spirit, Hannah and Lindsey, who work tirelessly to help the team.

We have a hugely successful cheerleading programme developing at Thorn Grove and we would welcome any children to the sessions, so if any pupils would like to join the squad, please see Mr Wilson in school.

Here are some of the pictures from the day.

Golf Teams perform well above par

On Wednesday the year 3/4 and 5/6 golf teams took part in the Stockport finals. The standard of golf and the putting and chipping skills on display were excellent and it was difficult to see how any team would lose points.

Both of the Thorn Grove teams performed amazingly and showed how their skills had improved massively from the first round.

The Year 5/6 Team were very close to being victorious and finished runners up, but the Year 3/4 team went one step further winning the competition and being crowned champions.

The Year 3/4 Team will now move on to represent Stockport in the Summer Greater Manchester Games later in the year.

An exciting opportunity to play basketball

Manchester Magics and Mystics are a basketball club who are dedicated to providing opportunities for all sections of the community, regardless of ability, background, gender or age.

The club is now based in Whalley Range at the Manchester Basketball Centre, but is starting academy sessions at the amazing new facilities at Laurus Cheadle Hulme in April 2019

The sessions will be delivered by coaches who work at one of the best junior development programs in the country and will be on a Tuesday Evening between 5:30 and 7pm

We currently have a very large number of children playing basketball at school and this would be an ideal opportunity to develop their skills.

For more information, or to book a place call Manchester Magics on: 0161 881 0090

An exciting opportunity to play tennis

The coaches from Queensgate Tennis Club have been working with our year two and three children this term and we would like to pass on information about their Junior Club night.

Any sports club’s future lies with the development of its young players, and Bramhall Queensgate Tennis Club are firmly committed to youth development. Their coaches, Darren & Hanna, are particularly active in helping to develop young players and would like to invite Thorn Grove pupils to their Junior Club Night every Friday 4.30 – 5.45pm.

There is no charge for Club Night for the next 5/6 weeks before the trial period is over.

The session is supervised by a number of coaches and student helpers. We play fun games on court and help the children improve their tennis while having fun.

Parents are more than welcome to use the facilities on Junior Club Night and can use the kitchen/bar whilst watching the children play. Food and drink are available for the children to buy in our tuck shop between 5.15 and 5.30

Gymnastics team take a giant leap forwards

Yesterday our talented Year 3 & 4 gymnastics team competed in the Greater Manchester Games. The games happen twice a year and the best teams in each of the nine Greater Manchester boroughs take part; we were representing Stockport after winning the borough competition.

At 8:30am yesterday morning, our excited and slightly nervous gymnasts boarded the minibus ready to travel to the opening ceremony, which was held at the Sport City Stadium in Manchester.

When we arrived, we were seated with all the other competitors, VIPs and supporters in the stadium and watched an amazing opening ceremony. Members of our team took part in the dancing and singing and thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

The final act of the opening ceremony was to ‘cut the ribbon’ to officially open the games. This was done by Kelly Massey an Olympic Bronze medalist and 400m Athlete.

The team then travelled to the gymnastics venue to begin their competition alongside Beth Tweddle (former GB Olympic medalist) and her team of coaches.

This is the first time the school has represented at this level and the standard was incredibly high with a huge number of very strong gymnasts and teams in every age group. The squad, although very nervous, remembered their routines brilliantly and performed with dynamism, poise and bravery (especially on the vault).

The team finished in 5th place, narrowly missing out on a bronze medal (there was only a very small difference in overall points scores separating the first five teams) which means they are are officially the 5th best them in the whole of Greater Manchester.

In addition to this, Alys in Year 3 was awarded the 3rd best gymnast overall in the whole competition.

They team represented the school magnificently and showed how dedicated and focused they were throughout the day. We are very very proud of them and special mention must go to Mrs Mansfield, for her help during the day and the parents who came to support.

Dodgeballers perform amazingly

A huge congratulations must go to our Year 5 and 6 dodgeball squad who  played brilliantly in the tournament held at Stockport Academy yesterday evening.

The competition was fierce and the arena was chaotic, but our skilled teams worked excellently together to put together a fine set of results.

We were took 3 teams and they all displayed great commitment, skill and desire. The represented Thorn Grove superbly and a special mention must go to our ‘B’ Team, who managed to remain unbeaten throughout the tournament and were crowned winners. They will go on to the ‘Legacy Games’ in June where they will pit themselves against the other best dodgeball teams in the borough.

Basketball team press forward

On Wednesday evening our highest ranking basketball team competed in the Stockport Basketball finals at Reddish Vale high School.

The team started very well, narrowly missing out to the eventual finalists, pressing them with a high tempo offence and dynamic defence. Unfortunately, as the tournament developed Thorn Grove  couldn’t turn pocession in to baskets and even though they played some magnificent basketball missed out out making the semi finals.

The team should be incredibly proud of themselves as they have developed hugely and were able to compete admirably against some very tough and experienced opponents. Sometimes it is the smallest of margins that decide games, but these tiny differences also show us how far we have come.

A special mention must go to Ruby T, who stepped up to join the squad and performed superbly – she was our spirit of the games winner.

Here is our team

Golf squads go a fair way to improving their performances

On Wednesday evening our golf squad, which includes pupils from years 3,4, 5 and 6. Attended Stockport Academy for the heats of the Stockport primary schools Tri-Golf competition.

The event always draws a large number of teams and the contest is always tough. However, our squad performed magnificently with our 5/6 team finishing runners up and our 3/4 team winning the event.

Both teams will move through to the finals and should be extremely proud of how they performed and how they represented the school.
