A busy week…

This week in Nursery has been very busy indeed! We have had some glorious sunny weather which has meant spending lots of time outside in the sun.

The Beginning of Week group had a visit from Sophia’s mummy Vicki who did a Rhythm Time session! The children had a go at playing some different musical instruments and also learnt all about sounds which are loud or quiet, fast or slow, and long or short.

The End of Week group had a visit from a Dental Nurse, who brought her friend Fred to help the children learn all about how to keep their teeth clean and healthy.

Nursery Showstopper 17th March

We have been learning all about dinosaurs this half term in the Nursery. It would seem that Alex, Arthur and Brody know everything there is to know about dinosaurs and have taught me lots! Alongside learning about ‘sorting’ in maths, the boys were able to sort lots of toy dinosaurs into two different groups: dinosaurs who walk on two legs, and dinosaurs who walk on four legs! Well done boys!

EYFS fun at Stockley Farm

Reception and Nursery enjoyed a fabulous day out at Stockley Farm where they learnt about animals and their young.  The children helped to feed and pet a range of animals. They especially liked the cheeky kid goats and a large curious pig called ‘Gladys’.  The children asked and answered lots of questions and finally took a ride on the tractor.  All the staff at Stockley farm commented on the fantastic behaviour of our children and were especially impressed by their keen interest in learning about the animals on the farm.  May we kindly thank all our wonderful helpers who joined us on the trip and listening to our endless rendition of ‘Old McDonald had a farm!’ during our tractor ride.  Here are a few of our highlights.

This week, Nursery and Reception have been introduced to their new friends, Pip and Pop (see below!) Pip lives in Nursery and Pop lives in Reception. We have been asking the children to draw pictures and write letters to Pip and Pop so that we can send them between classes. Lilah was fascinated by the whole thing and spent most of Tuesday afternoon drawing pictures and even copied their names to write ‘pip’ and ‘pop’. I am so impressed with her skills! Well done Lilah.

Nursery Showstopper 10th February

This week we have been learning about the differences between how we keep warm and how animals and people who live in polar regions keep warm. We found out all about igloos and produced our own igloo collage crafts using white paper squares and lots of glue.

Isla produced this incredibly neat igloo which she spent a very long time perfecting. Her concentration levels and attention to detail were seriously impressive! Well done Isla, keep it up!

Nursery Showstopper 3rd February

Rahil has only been at the Nursery for four weeks – but he has already shown us what a hard worker he is! Rahil enjoyed his weekly library book so much that he produced 6 pages of the most incredible writing and colourful drawings. He had a go at copying some extremely difficult words like ‘spider’, ‘party’ and ‘rhinoceros’.

Well done Rahil!

‘Green Flag’ award has been achieved!

We are absolutely thrilled to announce that we have successfully achieved our Green Flag award again! Well done Thorn Grove!

Over the last two years the Thorn Grove Eco team along with the whole school have been involved in a range of projects throughout the school to support our Green Flag award which we received in 2014 for our efforts to become more sustainable.

Recently the Eco team were interviewed by an ‘Eco-schools’ assessor to apply for our first ‘Green Flag’ renewal.  This involved our Eco-warriors taking the assessor on a tour of our school and sharing some of the projects we have done and are continuing to do across the school.  We have focussed on a number of areas including energy, biodiversity, waste, litter, recycling, healthy living and school grounds.

The Eco warriors answered a vast range of questions linked to all our projects showing a huge sense of pride for our fabulous school!  Well done everyone!  See our wonderful Eco Warriors along with some photographs of some of our projects throughout the year!img_3289

Rhyme Rocket lands at Thorn Grove!

img_15731On Tuesday 22nd November EYFS and Key Stage 1 eagerly anticipated the arrival of ‘The Rhyme Rocket’ team as seen on CBeebies. The children were introduced to rhyme in the most fun way possible.  They thoroughly enjoyed an energetic and exciting performance.  Our special visitors really did make learning come to life through entertaining songs, raps, chants, dance and lots of comedy.  The children haven’t stopped talking about it!

People who help come to Thorn Grove!

Throughout this half term in the Early Years we have had the pleasure of  special visitors who have come to talk to the children about their work in our community.  We practised our questioning techniques and met some fantastic people too!  Here are a few highlights!
